Minecraft Capes That Weren't Meant to Exist

We all know that getting a cape in Minecraft is like finding a golden ticket. Whether it comes from attending Minecon or migrating an account, capes are the ultimate flex. But sometimes, the developers at Mojang make mistakes.

Every now and then, a rare cape accidentally slips through the cracks and lands on a random player’s account. Mojang usually realizes the mistake quickly and takes it back, leaving the player with little more than a cool screenshot and a story to tell.

Here are four of the rarest “accident” capes that briefly appeared in the game.

The Valentine Cape

This one is a classic case of being too generous. A Mojang employee named Ekkelangelo gave this cape to a player called @LolFoxy2 after helping them fix issues with account migration.

It did not stay there for long. Once the employee realized how rare that cape actually was, it was removed. Interestingly, the same cape reportedly appeared again for a short time on @JoinGrave’s profile in early 2023 before vanishing once more.

The Test Cape (Size-M)

This cape looks like a mix of random colors, almost like a glitched Sniffer texture. It was originally made by @etanaratsastaja to test things out in the live game.

Because of a bug, the cape accidentally ended up on an account named @kemiamu. The player posted about it on social media, revealing that the internal name for the design was “size-m.” Mojang removed it from the account shortly after the post went viral.

The Oxeye Cape

If you have heard of the game Cobalt, you might recognize this logo: it belongs to Oxeye Game Studio. While nobody knows exactly why this cape was in the Minecraft files, it reportedly appeared on @iSxckk’s profile because of a bug.

The texture has been in the game code since at least September 2022, but it is definitely not something players are meant to own.

The Blueprint (or Document) Cape

This is one of the oldest mysteries on the list. The texture was created in 2015. It looks like a blue blueprint or technical document, but Mojang never gave it an official name. The first player known to use this cape was @SupaCookiebrat.

Like the Valentine cape, it seems to show up only when someone at Mojang makes a mistake during account updates. Since it has no official purpose, it remains one of those “ghost” items that only a few lucky players have seen in-game.

It is wild to think that a simple support ticket or random bug could briefly land someone one of the rarest cosmetics in Minecraft. If you ever log in and see a cape on your character that you did not earn, it will likely not stay there for long.
