Record the X, Y and Z coordinates of your existing portal and select its dimension as the starting point. In Java Edition, you can view your coordinates from the F3 debug screen.

Go to the calculated coordinates
Use the converted X, Y and Z coordinates to locate the ideal portal position in the other dimension. X and Z follow the 8:1 conversion, while Y remains unchanged as a reference height.

Build and test the portal
Build the second portal as close as possible to the calculated location, then travel through it in both directions. If Minecraft sends you somewhere else, check for nearby active portals that may be taking priority.
Overworld and Nether Coordinate Ratio
Minecraft uses an 8:1 horizontal coordinate ratio between the Overworld and Nether. Traveling one block in the Nether is equivalent to traveling eight blocks in the Overworld. For example, an Overworld position at X 800 and Z 400 corresponds to approximately X 100 and Z 50 in the Nether.
This relationship makes Nether portals useful for long-distance travel. A relatively short route through the Nether can cover a much larger distance in the Overworld, provided the portals are positioned and linked correctly.
How Minecraft Links Nether Portals
The coordinates produced by the calculator represent the ideal destination, but Minecraft does not create a permanent one-to-one connection between portal frames. When you enter a Nether portal, the game converts your position and searches for an existing active portal near the resulting coordinates.
If multiple portals are nearby, Minecraft can choose a different portal based on their positions relative to the target. This is why two portals that appear correctly placed on X and Z can still behave unexpectedly when their Y coordinates are very different or another portal is closer to the calculated destination.
If no suitable portal exists, Minecraft attempts to generate one near the target coordinates. Terrain and available space can move the generated portal away from the exact position, so manually building the destination portal near the calculated coordinates usually gives you more control over the connection.

This usually happens when another active portal is close enough to the calculated destination to be selected instead. Check the X, Y and Z positions of nearby portals and build the destination portal closer to the exact converted coordinates.
